Hello. Day 2. St. Helens to Welches. 75 miles. Elevation gain: 2,825
After we loaded our luggage we had a “tutorial” in the parking lot on checking your bike to make sure nothing is loose, mis-aligned, or otherwise in need of attention.
We were reminded to stay well-hydrated—which I did. No cramping today, but sore triceps from leaning on bent arms. Legs OK, butt OK.
Best parts of the ride: cruising along the bike path beside the Columbia with bro and Portland Tren who joined us for a short stretch; riding through the rolling countryside past nursery after nursery. Such an abundance…
Worst parts: climbing a long hill out of Troutdale, and a climb in the sun out of Sandy on Hwy 30 to Calamity Jane’s—a restaurant with a ceiling covered in dollar bills.
Getting off the bike, and sitting down with sweetened ice tea was just the ticket.
At 5:15 we had our RAP session (don’t know what it stands for), but it’s group meeting to review the day and preview tomorrow’s ride. We each get cue sheets showing turn-by-turn directions, along with an elevation profile, and where the rest stops are.
We met in the lobby of the Resort at the Mountain, billed as the fanciest place on the tour.
Grand Junction Kate sent this:
Seventy-five miles along the river Sandy.
Sure hope things went along just dandy.
Good rest to you tonight.
May tomorrow’s weather be bright.
And should energy ebb reach for the candy.
